Configuring Hetzner turn-key (“Storage”) Nextcloud with OnlyOffice

*** Sad update as of 30 April 2025: due to incompatibility between the latest version of CDS and NextCloud, there has been a major bug (https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/onlyoffice-nextcloud/issues/1066). Via email, Hetzner announced (https://status.hetzner.com/incident/e9878d8c-9875-49bb-ba10-3aa263957db2) they are discontinuing the built-in document server. Ugh. ***

I recently switched to Hetzner’s Storage solution (from self-hosting via YunoHost on a raspberry pi), in preparation for a move, during which I wouldn’t be able to run my home server. After a fair amount of trial and error really just error, thanks to some help from r/Hetzner I figured out how to integrate OnlyOffice with Hetzner’s turn-key (“Storage”) server.

  1. Get OnlyOffice app: <HOST>/settings/apps/office/onlyoffice where HOST is your Hetzner Storage domain
  2. Go to the OnlyOffice admin page: <HOST>/settings/admin/onlyoffice and add your community document server location (<HOST>/apps/documentserver_community/). This also requires downloading the “Community document server” app, which weirdly I had trouble locating until using the search bar after several reboots.
  3. Save!

    Ohne diese Anleitung hätte ich es wahrscheinlich nie geschafft.

    It seems that it’s currently not possible to install the document community server. I got this reply from Hetzner support:

    “Guten Tag Herr xxxxx,

    der eingebaute OnlyOffice Server [1] hat seit einiger Zeit keine Updates mehr von den Nextcloud Entwicklern erhalten (letztes Update 30. Oktober 2024). Die OnlyOffice-Integration [2] selbst wird jedoch weiterhin aktiv von den OnlyOffice-Entwicklern gepflegt (letztes Update 12. Februar 2025). Dies führt nun zu dem Problem, dass die beiden Apps zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt nicht mehr miteinander kompatibel sind.

    Leider haben wir keinen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der beiden Apps und können zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt auch keine kurzfristige Lösung anbieten. Als Alternative haben Sie derzeit nur die Möglichkeit, einen eigenen OnlyOffice Server aufzusetzen oder alternativ auf Collabora (Nextcloud Office) umzusteigen. Für Collabora (Nextcloud Office) benötigen Sie allerdings auch einen eigenen Collabora Server, da dieser aus Performancegründen nicht im Storage Share Paket enthalten ist.

    Entsprechende Anleitungen zur Einrichtung werden jedoch von anderen Kunden auf unserer Community-Plattform zur Verfügung gestellt:

    Ein Downgrade der Integration ist leider nicht mehr möglich, da in Kürze auch die Upgrades der Storage Share Instanzen anstehen und spätestens dann die alte Version nicht mehr mit Nextcloud 30 kompatibel ist.

    Wir sind uns bewusst, dass diese Antwort möglicherweise nicht Ihren Erwartungen entspricht. Wir möchten jedoch betonen, dass wir keinen Support für zusätzlich aktivierte Apps aus dem Appstore leisten können.

    I cannot find the “Community document server” app, in my Storage Share instance, no matter how hard I try!

      Recently there’s been an issue with the Storage Share and the latest version of CDS. Hetzner just sent out an email that they’re removing the built-in document server due to incompatibility. Sounded like there was no official date at which (or promise of) it returning…
